White Wines
Maturano - a rare, white grape grown at I Ciacca Picinisco, Val Comino, Lazio. This ancient variety is to be found only in Picinisco and nearby. DNA analysis shows it is not related to any other grapes to be found in the world. It is Certified Organic - although we knew anyway as this land was an ancient vineyard, which had been abandoned for over 50 years - but worked by our family for at least 500 years!
We planted our first Maturano vines in 2013 under the supervision of our friend and winemaker Dr Alberto Antonini.
After more than 50 years being abandoned, our new vines produced their first harvest in 2017 coincidentally with the Millenium celebrations of Picinisco. Maturano is an indigenous, local white grape. Now, a few winemakers are starting to use this fantastic grape once again.
Picinisco was known for Maturano in an agricultural survey carried out by the government after the unification of Italy and another survey in th 1560s speaks of the excellent quality of white wine from Picinisco. An ampeological DNA study commissioned by us in 2017 proves the Maturano grape to be an ancient variety and with our parental links to any other known grape in the world.
Our aim is to offer Maturano wines in a variety of styles as we come to know and understand this exciting grape. these wines will be exclusively made from our organically grown grapes.
At the same time, we aim to produce a limited quantity of red wine using only organic grapes grown and sourced locally.
We use no pesticides or synthetic materials and we are have been awarded organic certification by ICEA - confirming that synthetic fertilisers or pest controls have never been used at I Ciacca.
Maturano is a unique and ancient grape. other than a few experimental local grapes, it is the only grape we currently grow at I Ciacca.

Consultant oenologist and family friend Alberto Antonini (named by his peers in Decanter magazine(2015) as 1 of the top 5 winemakers in the world) has been involved in the development of the vineyard and Cantina since 2012. For 3 years, while our grapes were growing, Sofia, Luca and Onorio started to learn about wine making while working in Alberto’s Tuscan cantina during the harvest.

Red Wines
Our red wines are made from certified organic grapes sourced locally from vineyards well know to us.
The wines are then made in our concrete tanks, under the guidance of our friend Alberto Antonini.
Our first Cabernet is currently resting and will soon be transferred to french oak tonneau to mature. Bottling and release dates are still to be announced.
Vinification
We continue to experiment with different ways of vinification to seek to maximise the flavours, quality and longevity of the wine we produce. We only release to the market those we consider excellent. We are confident however that as the vines themselves mature and our knowledge and experience of care for them and vinification of this unique grape grows, our wines can only become better.
